ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. – Local attorney Sue Ann Armitage has garnered extensive support from the law enforcement community in her quest for election as St. Mary’s County’s next Circuit Court judge. Police support for Armitage has helped propel her candidacy, along with endorsements from many prominent elected officials from both sides of the aisle.
Armitage has received the vocal support of many law enforcement officers. Most prominent among them is the retired Sheriff of St. Mary’s County, Tim Cameron. Cameron was chosen by voters four consecutive times to lead the Sheriff’s Department and was never defeated.
“Sue Ann has the toughness needed to do the job as our Circuit Court Judge,” Cameron said, noting that her work on behalf of victims of domestic violence touches all areas of the law. “She has proven to me that she can, and will, focus on keeping our community safe.”
A solid “blue line” of support for Armitage has emerged as the campaign progressed. Current State Senator Jack Bailey retired after 30 years as a Sergeant in the Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources Police. Sen. Bailey describes Sue Ann as “ready to deal with the problem of repeat violent offenders in our community.” He adds “We need different outcomes than what we’ve been seeing. I’ve known Sue Ann for nearly forty years. She has a reputation for integrity in the courthouse and in the community”.
Armitage’s campaign treasurer is Capt. Eric Sweeney, who retired after serving for 31 years in the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. “My concern for public safety didn’t end when I retired,” Sweeney said. “Sue Ann’s abilities and work ethic make her the right choice.”
Sgt. Mark Karwacki of the MD State Police said he knows Sue Ann’s ability from personal observation. “I’ve seen Sue Ann in action in the courtroom, and she is extremely capable,” Karwacki noted. “She has my vote.”
Joining them in supporting Armitage’s campaign is Jack Curtis, who served for 50 years in law enforcement, first with the Metropolitan Police in Washington, DC, and then for 25 years with the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. According to Curtis, “I know what we need in a judge. Sue Ann works hard. She’s fair. She has integrity. I’m voting for her.”
Other officers endorsing Armitage include Sgt. Gary Willis, MD State Police (Ret.); Trooper First Class Dave Koenig, MD State Police (Ret.); Dep. Skip Stewart, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office’s longest-serving officer; and Dep. First Class Lawrence Vallandingham (Ret.).
