WILSON, WY — A multi-vehicle crash on Highway 22 shut down Teton Pass shortly after noon Tuesday and left two people dead and four others injured, according to local officials. Emergency crews responded above Wilson and found multiple disabled vehicles, an overturned dump truck and asphalt spilled across the roadway.
What crews found
Jackson Hole Fire/EMS said responders arrived to a scene blocked by several passenger vehicles and the overturned truck. Officials also said a medical helicopter landing zone was being set up as crews worked the wreck.
By midafternoon, first responders had transported four patients to St. John’s Health in Jackson. Fire and EMS units later cleared the scene, but the Wyoming Highway Patrol remained there to investigate the cause.
Road closure timeline
Traffic stopped just after noon, and officials said at first they did not know when the pass could reopen. The Teton County Sheriff’s Office told drivers to expect the closure to last for several hours while emergency crews worked on scene.
WYDOT later estimated Highway 22 would not reopen until close to sunset, then updated that forecast to somewhere between 7 and 9 p.m. Officials urged motorists to avoid the area completely until the roadway could be safely cleared.
Deaths and injuries confirmed
Teton County Coroner Brent Blue confirmed the crash killed two people but did not release their names. Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Chief Mike Moyer said four patients were taken for treatment, while the total number of vehicles involved was not immediately specified.
Multiple county, state and partner agencies responded, including Air Idaho, Jackson Police Department, Saint John’s Medical Center, the coroner’s office, emergency management, the sheriff’s office and Wyoming Highway Patrol. Officials described the crash as complex and tragic.
Investigation continues
The Wyoming Highway Patrol is still investigating what caused the collision, and recovery and hazardous materials personnel stayed on scene during the cleanup. Officials had not released additional details about how the crash unfolded.
Drivers looking for updates were directed to WYDOT’s road information map. Local authorities said the highway would remain closed until responders finished their investigation and cleared the debris safely.
