BILLINGS, MT — Dangerous heat is in place across eastern Montana and northern Wyoming, where Heat Advisories and Extreme Heat Warnings remain active through today and will run into tonight and tomorrow in some areas. At the same time, central Montana is facing a risk for scattered strong to severe storms.
Forecasters said temperatures will climb into the 80s and 90s today, with some spots in eastern Montana reaching the low 100s. Overnight temperatures are also expected to stay warm, especially in the east, where lows may settle into the 60s and 70s.
Storm Risk Across Central Montana
The severe weather outlook for central Montana is a level 2 out of 5 risk, with the main concern being damaging wind gusts of 60 miles per hour or higher. Hail up to one inch in diameter is also possible.
The first storms are expected to develop near the Idaho-Montana border by early afternoon, then move north and east while building in strength. By around 6 p.m., forecasters expect the storms to be mature and spreading rain and wind across central Montana.
Flood Watch In Place
A Flood Watch has been issued for western and central Montana because some low-lying areas could be prone to flooding as storms move through. The watch comes on top of the severe weather threat and could add another hazard for people in the path of the storms.
Forecasters said additional showers and storms are possible in the same areas tomorrow, which could keep the wet weather pattern going into another day.

Officials are urging people to take standard heat precautions while the warnings are active. That includes drinking plenty of water and taking breaks indoors if you are outside for long periods.
They also remind families to protect children and pets from the heat, especially during the hottest part of the day.
