MOUNTRAIL COUNTY, ND — A 22-year-old New Town man was killed early Monday in a two-vehicle crash east of Palermo, the North Dakota State Patrol said. The collision happened just after midnight on U.S. Highway 2 near 67th Avenue Northwest, about five miles east of town.
How the crash unfolded
Investigators said a 2008 GMC Sierra was heading south on 67th Avenue Northwest while a 2020 Ford Expedition was traveling east on Highway 2. The patrol said the Sierra failed to yield at the intersection and struck the rear driver’s side of the Expedition in an angle crash.
Victims and injuries
The driver of the Sierra, Mark Eliason, died at the scene from his injuries. State patrol reported that he was not wearing a seatbelt.
The Expedition driver, Monah Lee, 59, of Minot, had minor injuries and was wearing a seatbelt.
Weather and road conditions
Authorities said the pavement was wet at the time of the wreck and rain was falling in the area. Those conditions were noted as part of the crash investigation.
Agencies at the scene
The North Dakota State Patrol is still investigating the incident. The Mountrail County Sheriff’s Office, Stanley Fire Department and Stanley Ambulance also responded to the crash scene.
